Project Name: 21c Durham
Location: Durham, North Carolina
Size: 134,000 Square Feet
Description:
21c Durham reimagines the Hill Building, designed in 1937 by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, architects of the Empire State Building. The Art Deco details of the historic landmark embody the glamour and modernity of their age; they inspired our transformation of the building into a 10,500 square foot contemporary art gallery, boutique hotel, restaurant, bar and event space.
The project goal was to find a synergy between the original structure and contemporary design. The Main Gallery, located in the banking hall of the former Home Savings Bank and Trust Company, combines existing wood paneling and terrazzo floors with new velvet drapery and LED globe chandeliers. In the guest rooms, Art Deco windows and steel accents are married with a refined materials palette in grey tones and copper details. The Counting House restaurant and bar occupies the former Ellis stone Department Store, noted by the oversize picture windows that frame Durham’s surrounding downtown.
